Slash Talks About GN'R, Axl and CD
Not only is he regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, but Slash was also behind one of the greatest - and most mythical - rock bands of the past 25 years. And while his days as the lead guitarist for Guns N' Roses ended long ago, Slash has since moved on to other endeavors, namely, as the lead guitarist for supergroup Velvet Revolver.
The quintet includes former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland and other founding members of GNR.
Before Velvet Revolver launched its latest tour, Slash talked about his days in GNR, the future of Velvet Revolver and, of course, Axl Rose.
Question: You've mentioned before that all good frontmen are a little bit out there. Does that hold even more true in your case, considering you've worked with Scott Weiland and Axl Rose?
Slash: I know a lot of musicians; instrumentalists and singers alike are a little different than normal. You have to be coming from a bit of a different place to be the frontman for a musical entity. Compared to a guitar player or drummer, you're using your own voice and doing the public-address kind of thing ... Axl and Scott are unique among the singing group. In my experience, they're also a couple of the most talented and individualistic people that I've ever seen.
Question: When did you begin to see Velvet Revolver as a long-term project?
Slash: For me, I don't think very long term. If I'm doing something I feel strongly about, I work on it, and I'm in the moment. .. I look back on the year, and it was definitely cool, and we're still just doing that. We're touring through April, then looking at working on the next record. I'm looking forward now, but I couldn't tell you where we'll be this time next year.
Question: Do you mind the "supergroup" label?
Slash: I didn't take the supergroup label to heart too much. It's very irritating because this band wasn't based on the principles that we all know supergroups are based on. .. This band is very organic in a way, and to be viewed as one-dimensional is not so much offensive, but it's definitely tedious.
Question: When writing those songs for Guns N' Roses back in the day, did you ever imagine they would live on like they have?
Slash: No. Remember what I told you about not having any foresight into the future? Back then, I had even less (laughs). I never really imagined it to that extent. As great a rock 'n' roll band as GNR was, it was a fluke in a way, with making such an impact and people listening to it. There's a bigger mystique about the band now (than when the original lineup was together).
Question: You recently released your autobiography ("Slash"), and you sort of took the high road in regards to your differences with Axl. Do you think people expected you to bash him?
Slash: More than expecting me to, I think they wanted me to. Everybody was poised for picking that book up and reading all the negative stuff they could possibly hear about Axl. That was not my whole purpose of expelling that relationship and the demise of the band. I just wanted to shed some light on the reality of why we broke up, not to berate Axl for anything that he didn't deserve. Axl is not as bad a guy as some people make him out to be, and I wanted some clarity on that.
Question: Guns N' Roses is up for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a few years. Should you get in, any chance the band reunites for a one-off performance?
Slash: You know, in a perfect world, it would be nice. There's a lot of pressure on any sort of band that breaks up that is that popular, the Van Halen thing or the Police or whatever. .. I don't know whether the circumstances will permit us wanting to get together and play, but it would be a whole different spirit-of-the-moment thing. You never know what ends up happening over the next few years, how it develops.
Question: Do you ever think we'll see Axl's mythical "Chinese Democracy"?
Slash: I hear through the grapevine bits and pieces of what's going on, and I'm interested to see what it sounds like because it will be such a huge statement. Although I wouldn't say we split up over musical differences, we did have some musical direction going toward the end there, and I'd be interested to see where it was headed. But I'm not holding my breath because I know Axl, and one of the problems with the band was sitting around (waiting for him). .. It will come out when it's ready to come out, but I don't have the anticipation that everyone else has.

Good stuff, thanks.

This is like a fuckin replica of a past interview with slash... The guy writes the fuckin book, does interviews for a while before and after the book and people still ask him the same shit...
Here Is A VERY SIMPLE QUESTION that should be asked...
Q. If AXL were to call you right now and say, lets get together lets make it work... Would you say yes.
And I am not taking a fuckin answer like well things would have to be in the right place and other crap....
If AXL calls right now, and wanted to make it work, WOUlD you say YES???????????????????????????????/
How is that, maybe I should be a fuckin reporter...
2/12/2008 | 9:01:29 AM by split66
fuck I would love to hear the absolute truth out of this guys mouth one time in an interview. AXLs not a bad guy.. blah blah blah.. tell it as it is pussy. He is supposedly responsible for the demise of your career... his also really. Stop pussy footing around the questions and start being honest with yourself and the fans. Maybe then you will gain a lick of respect back from AXL.

Anyone think that maybe Axl is delaying the release of Chinese Democracy beacuse maybe deep down in his heart of hearts he hopes for a reunion and would rather put it out with the original gang and not the new version of GNR?
2/12/2008 | 2:06:33 PM by T
Personally i think slash is worried about the upcomming STP reunion, and that he and the boys might be left out in the cold once again. sounds to me, in every interview slash does hes gettin nicer and nice, towards axl and much much nice to the idea of a reunion. It would be great to see and original GNR line up gig, but ive seen slash and duff and matt, and even izzy on numerous occations (except izzy, only once for him) but ive neve seen AXL or any of the new guys. and im way more excited to have the chance to see them play the old stuff, and the new stuff, and blow my mind. RIP slash, AXL's reloaded his guns, and he's got em' pointed at the world!!
2/12/2008 | 2:07:46 PM by T
and i do mean HIS Guns.
2/12/2008 | 2:29:39 PM by Slash Without Cash
Yes I agreed that Slash is worried about future reunion of Stone Temple Pilots. That's why in every interview he said "concerts with oldgunners will be fun". The biggest problem for original GNR line up is to ask papa Axl -Can we?- It was ONLY rumour few months ago. Now, even Duff is showin' his aprobate for this idea. So if papa Axl sees those signs and read comments on forums sometimes newspapers what he thinks about it? What is he suppose to do now?
1. Realise his Chinese project.
2. Concerts ( Poland is waiting!!!).
3. Conversation between two sides.
4. New albums withold gunners.
For me very simple scenerio if both sides would like to talk with each other.

GNR TOGETHER FOVER!!!
2/12/2008 | 2:39:04 PM by Slash Without Cash
Problem: what will happen' with new staff if old one will play concerts with Axl?
Little bit of imagination is needed to answer this. Now two groups are livin' on their own. So leave those things and started think about upcoming GNR album.
I wonder how this thing is going to be?
A. Supermelancholic ....
B. Superalcoholic ....
C. Superrock ....
D. Second AFD ....
2/12/2008 | 3:34:16 PM by 2112
AXL's reloaded his guns, and he's got em' pointed at the world!!
I love this line, T.
CD will be released and unless the tour is a complete diaster in ticket sales, I doubt you'll ever see a reunion tour. A reunion tour would take place for one reason and one reason only. Money.
Slash and Duff quit the band. They were not fired. Axl quit the band and took GnR name with him because he owned it after Slash and Duff signed it over to him. Axl invited Slash and Duff to stay in HIS band and they refused.
They wanted to see Axl fall flat on his face. You know and I know it. So, if Slash and Duff tried to ruin you, would you want to do a reunion tour with them and make them millions of dollars each?
What made Ozzy great was that he always brought in great new guitar players. If GNRs current geetar pickers left the band many new ones would be lining up to take their place.
And quite frankly, I could see Axl taking Slash back but not Duff. Slash has a great image for a band, Duff doesn't. Slash is known more for his image than his picking. If Slash was as great as he thought he was Slash's Snake Pit band would've taken off. It didn't. End of story.

Why does everyone constsantly say that Slash wants back in Guns? Why does everyone say that it killed his career when he didn't accept Axl offer to come back in the band? Why is Slash buttering up Axl so he'll ask him to come back?
He has siad time and time again, GnR is in the past, he has a new band (whether or not you like them) he seems content with the direction its going. Slash has publically stated that beyond VR's next album, he wants to do a solo album with various lead singers.
His book is massivly successful, VR is doing well, its not that much of a stretch to say that he is making more money now than he has in the last 10 years.
As for Duff, he likes to play. He is in everything. Except for the last 2 itunes albums that Izzy released, Duff played on all his of them. He guests on many different albums, he studied business to make him more successful in his down time. He strikes me as a no BS guy. He doesn't need Axl. The only real ex-gunner that needs Axl is Steven. All the other guys have moved past GnR. Face it, Axl is a paranoid recluse who is afraid to release ChiDem for fear of failure. The other ex Guns have all continued on with their careers with varied success, but that hasn't deterred them. Why hope and prey for Axl to call them back when really its just a step backwards for them. Guns N Roses circa 1986-1991 are dead. Move on
2/12/2008 | 6:10:43 PM by Chaz
"The only real ex-gunner that needs Axl is Steven"
Come on now, I saw him a couple of years ago on The Surreal Life. Granted it was only a gust spot, but that shows promise, right?
2/12/2008 | 6:14:13 PM by Chaz
As for Slash, I think he just likes to play. Sure sucess is nice, but I think he's happy putting new songs together and touring. He's already made money, so a GNR reunion isn't what he's shooting for, but if it happens, it happens.
2/12/2008 | 6:15:42 PM by split66
I was asking 2112 if he was from Logan Lake. But I must say.. you being from VanCity and not knowing where the Lake is.. well.. that is a bit odd.

Whats up with Brian Mantia? Is he back with GnR? The dude is off the charts! Circles around Adler and Sorum combined. Check out Rock in Rio 3. Forget Axl shitty voice, it was a dark period.
Buckethead is amazing. I know Brian and Buckethead just collaborated on another side project called Science Faction. Its coming out early this year. Any bets it'll be out before Chi Dem???
This guy is awesome. I hope he's back

Hi everyone. I've just been on you tube looking on so GNR stuff and i came across is video of Kurt Cobain trashing Axl on stage (which is a low thing to do anyway) I have know about this Axl/Kurt thing but some of the comments on that page really got to me, I really disagree with Kurt and Nirvana. I have been coming on to this site for a couple of years now and you all seem pretty cool, I wanted to get your opinions on it.

There is a YouTube video you have to check out, AXL ROSE INSULTS IRON MAIDEN (kind of)
I know I cant post links so search for the following

Oh yeah, not metal baby.....ignore the KISS remarks, Axl was drunk :)

Nirvana was complete garbage. I can't belive Axl liked them and I can totally understand why Axl had Kurt taken out.
And I don't know anyone in Canada who says aboot. It's an America joke, huh?
We say eh. How you doin' eh?
Americans say. Eh, how you doin'?

Oh and Gerad
I had a look. Listen Kurt and Kris are going on and on about the establishment and all that bullshit and how their against it blah blah blah. But this all happened at the MTV AWARDS!!!! Which Nirvana didn't seem to mind attending. MTV are the establishment in musical terms (and yes, they were in 1992 aswell) so, let them have their bullshit anarchism, but paper politics, it's another to actually practice what you preach.
Fuck Kurt Cobain and Fuck Nirvana (I really like Nirvana, but fuck em anyway)
sorry for the profanities BP and Tony, but nobody, not even the Golden Boy Cobain.
and actually, whats with this holier than though bullshit around Nirvana. He isn't Elvis ya know. Nirvana were a good band, but not inspiring and as far as I'm concerned, one good band doesn't make up for the years of damage caused to groups like Guns N'Roses and Def Leppard. Also, we have had to sit through hordes of these Nancy rock stars who either smoke a joint and go into rehab or immediately start endorsing Make Trade Fair products and charity to increase their profile and album sales.
I for one wont be sad when the days of Radiohead, Coldplay, The Killers, Pete Doherty and all that other crap is gone and forgotten.
Bring back the Guns, bring back the balls into rock music and forget the recycling, charity crap, leave that to U2. This sort of shit shouldnt be encouraged anymore.
2/13/2008 | 1:48:57 AM by 2112
I saw a clip on youtube where Axl said Iron Maiden wasn't rock n' roll. He said, I don't know what they are. He said he didn't turn out to be like them, or something close to that.
You've had 20 years to figure it out Mr. Rose. I challenge you to get in this ring and come and explain to us what they are.
Axl studied Bruce (I don't blame him) and he copied Bruce's style on stage. I challenge Axl to take off his skirt and be a man to admit it.
If he denies it he'd be lying, because he knew who maiden was when he was asked. And he was right, GNR still hasn't managed to turn out to be as good as Maiden and their 757 plane load of tour equipment.
2/13/2008 | 1:53:38 AM by SWW
So when the Chinese Democracy download / boxset and CD appear, who reckons it will be successful with the masses, as opposed just with GNR faithful (for which there are many!)
Listening to the leaks - songs like Madagascar, T.W.A.T, The Blues are awesome Axl epics but other album tracks sound a bit dated (Silkworms) and risk making the whole project flop. It's been so long in production, some of the songs must already be out of touch before even being released....
Thoughts?
PS just to keep with the theme, i'm on opposite side of world to Canada but there are plenty of you guys here!
2/13/2008 | 2:01:40 AM by 2112
Where you from SWW?
I don't see the new Guns cd being a hit. It's been too long. The old Fans have grown up. It'll have too be damn good to get people to buy it. But this goes for all bands, not just GNR. People just don't buy cds like they used too.
However, if AFD were released today, Paradise City and Sweet Child would still be major hits. The songs are timeless and totally rock.

Pete Docherty can keep taking drugs and not produce any music again for all I care but a bit of respect should be given to Radiohead, Coldplay, killers.......I read an article Axl getting into Radiohead during his real reclusive stage in late 90s and he should follow their lead by releasing Chinese Democracy as a download as well as a cd.....will build the hype

Roger Hodgson, formerly of Supertramp, and Axl a few things in common.
Both are lead singers in bands.
Both moved to and live in California.
Both developed egos after making it big.
Both were into drugs and women.
Both play piano and sing falsetto.
Both broke up their bands.
Both were the heart and soul of their bands.
Both liked performing without their shirt on.
Both got into spirital stuff.
Both have women assistants.
Both can be said to be a little weird at times.
Both went into depressions.
Both developed writers block.
Both got into Radiohead during their down time.
Both fail to communicate with fans.
Both came back into the music world.
Both tour outside of the USA more than inside.
Both artists I totally dig.

So why are you making the comparison 2112? What's your point? I'm not getting it maybe. Why have you been bashing gnr all day and putting every other band under the sun up on a pedestal. what's up with that? Just wondering........I'm from Toronto so we don't always understand our east coast brethren but we love them nonetheless

Hey axlismygod,
Duff isn't back with Loaded. They are writing a new record, but he isn't with them. They have a myspace page that names their new bass player, but I can't remember who it is at the moment.

Michael Jackson's Thriller album was re-released today to mark its 25th anniversary. Its still a great/relevant pop masterpiece today. That being said, one will be able to say the exact same thing 5 years from now when AFD turns 25! Still totally relevant and yes SCOM, Jungle, Paradise City, Brownstone, Nightrain et al would still be massive today!

I know I'm about to get lynched, but if this a G N R website, why are there so many haters? G N R is basically Axl now, so if you're not down with G N R, why hate on Axl? Like everyone else, I'd be over the moon to see an original G N R reniuon, but since that isn't happening anytime in the future (or most likely never), I'm in the camp of I'll take whatever I can get. And who the hell is Pinetree and why does she think she has the info on Axl? Just curious.

You people that keep crappin on that Slash and the rest have gone on to do nothing with their careers while Axl carreer has blossomed without them, are clearly the most deluded fuckwits on the planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! apart from us on here nobody gives a shit about Chinese Democracy anymore . 99% of rock fans just want a renunion and untill that happens as far as they are concerned Axl Rose is just a hermit whose career as been on hold for 15 years while Slash and Duff are out there with a flourishing career. A music career means that your putting out stuff and making money off it. Something Axl hasnt done in donkeys years so if you look at it 2112 you wanker youd see after Slash and Duff "quit the band" , thered be a pretty good argument for saying Axl did fall flat on his fucking pug face!

I'm not bashing GNR. I'm maybe comparing them but only because Axl brought up Maiden 20 years before I found this site. He's never discussed RUSH, might you, but he sang a RUSH tune with Bubbles and Baz.
Why should we be limited to only discussing GNR. Many stories on here are from members of other bands or people anyway.
It's all in good fun, for me anyway.
And I may be the exception, but I don't want Axl reuniting with the original members. Ever. They quit. I wanted she this version in concert. Even if the old crew reunited it will never be the same anyway, because Axl's voice has completely changed. He still may be able to tweak it in the sudio recording, but from the clips I've seen on youtube, he's not the same person in voice, appearance or performance.
For him to get back with them would be like going out with an old girlfriend again. And you all know that'll never work out in the end.
A reunion would be for profit only, and I personally would never support it. But that's me.

I agree.. no reunion please.

So since this is a Slash thread I'll ask Slash two questions, since I know he's reading it.
Slash, please tell us why you selected Scott over Baz as your lead singer for VR?
You know you love Canada yet you passed up a Canadian rock vocalist whose not a junkie and who has a great voice and stage presence?
Were you afraid you'd become another Slave to the Grind?
Was it's Duffs idea?
Or just more bad judgment and decision making?
Did you go to Axl's house uninvited at 5 a.m.ish on the morning in question?
Come on, tell us...

Nobody knows the exact circumstances as to who quit the band, who was fired etc. There are two sides to every story and somewhere in the middle there is the truth. It was a long time ago and I'm sure the animosity between Axl, Duff and Slash has lessened over time. I'm not sure about a reunion but one thing I think we can all agree on is that Matt Sorum would never be included. He's the biggest Axl basher there is, this is a guy who should be thank Axl for making his career. He's a goof

So I went and picked up Slash's book. I'm only on page 100. But I like how he credits Steven for playing geetar, and how they were best friends since school, yet he wouldn't let Steven be his drummer in VR. Nice friend.
But I can also see why Slash became a great slinger. He played RUSH and Pat Travers.

back to the kurt cobain thang, he played off being cool, couldnt care less why am i even here guy. Axl gave him shit about kourtney,,,well looking back it looks like axl was right about her. the fact of the matter is he was scared and jelous and most of all he is dead. there is so chance of him releasing anything, granted all weve had is demos and couple tours since his demise at least there is hope..
so i guess axl wins that one.
"its never to late"
if you havnt seen famous last words with axl and kurt loder-go and you tube it. kurt asks him something about if the band ever were to break up if he could ever play with another band, the answer is pretty entertaining. He also tries to pry into what is on the illusions album and axls answers are alot like the ones you here about cd.

Kurt Cobain quoted Neil Young in his suicide note, using the line “It’s better to burn out, than to fade away” from Young’s song "Hey Hey, My My". Because of this, Young decided not to play the song live anymore.

Did Neil really say that quote first in his song? I kind of doubt it. Kind of a lame reason not to ever sing the song again if this is a fact. AXL quotes Bob Dylan in Estranged.... does Dylan now somehow feel a connection / responsibility for AXL actions?

I've read a bit more of Slash's book now. I was surprised to see Kim Fowley was considered as a manager. Kim is a bit out there but has a great track record in the biz. He spotted GNRs talent, although GNR turned him down.
Fowley was present when Paul McCartney met Charles Manson at the studio when the Beach Boys were recording.
Slash also says he loves the song Dear Prudence.
Dear Prudence was written abut Mia Farrow's sister. Mia Farrow starred in the movie Rosemary's Baby. Rosemary's baby was directed by Roman Polaski. Roman Polanski was married to Sharon Tate. Sharon Tate was murdered by Tex Watson. Tex Watson was a Charles Manson member.
Rosemary's Baby was filmed at the Dakota in New York City. John Lennon was murdered at the Dakota.
It was on the set of this film that Mia Farrow received divorce papers from then-husband Frank Sinatra.
Charles Manson claims to have slept with Frank Sinatra's granddaughter. The daughter of Nancy Sinatra.
Mia Farrow's sister Prudence attended Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's spiritual retreat in India at the same time the Beatles were there. Some of the Beach Boys were also there. Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys was connected to the Manson family.
The Beach Boys recorded one of Manson's songs. Ceist to Exist, renamed Never Learn Not ot Love. The song can be found on the Beach Boys 20/20 album.
GNR recorded a Manson song, Look at your Game Girl.

In 1972, Neil Young fired Danny Whitten of Crazy Horse because he became a junkie. Neil gave Whitten a plane ticket to LA and fifty bucks to get himself some help. Once in LA, Whitten spent the $50 on heroin and promptly overdosed, dead at age 29.
Young said that for a long time after Whitten died, he felt responsible for Whitten's death. It took him years to stop blaming himself.
Kurt's suicide note mentioning Neil clearly affected him.
I think Courtney Love had Kurt and Kristen Pfaff murdered.

Appetite is my favorite album and Slash is near my favorite guitarist, but he is a BIG pussy! He wimped out when he gave the rights of the band to Axl. And in his book he says that he couldn't stop those other guys from giving his friend Todd Crew heroin, even though the other guys were some clowns. Bullshit you big pussy. You aided in his death because you can't stand up to anyone. And even now 30 years later you still can't admit to yourself that you caused his death.

"Ladders to Hell" that is a great title for the next album!
